Radiation releases radioactive materials such as radium and strontium which increases the number of mineral deposits in the bones. Bone marrow stem cell transplants have been known to create a predisposition as well.
Even diseases like Paget's which is an abnormality in the bones, most common in people over 50, can create a predisposition to bone metastasis. Some even believe that injuries to bones can predispose a person to bone cancer, but this hasn't been proven.
As with many disorders, bone metastasis is sometimes hard to detect because there aren't always symptoms. Furthermore, symptoms may appear as the first sign of bone metastasis or after many years of having cancer.
Doctors have not yet determined why cancer will spread to the bones and not other areas of the body.
