Oritavancin is used to kill bacteria and prevent bacterial growth in patients suffering from infections of the skin or skin structure.

Overview

Oritavancin is an antibacterial medication that is used to treat infections of the skin or skin structure infections. Oritavancin works to kill bacteria and prevent its growth. It is not effective against viral infections such as colds or flu.

This medication is available with a prescription only and should be given under the supervision of a doctor. It is prescribed as Orbactiv in the form of powder for solution.

Side Effects

Occurring infrequently:

  • Changed coloration of the skin
  • Increased heartbeat or pulse
  • Irregularity of heartbeat or pulse
  • Irritated skin that may be dry, hot or inflamed
  • Tenderness, pain or swelling of the skin

Occurring only rarely:

  • Black stools with a tarry appearance
  • Blistering or peeling of the skin
  • Feverishness
  • Hives
  • Increased bone pain
  • Itching of the skin
  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Joint swelling
  • Loosening of the skin
  • Rash
  • Reddening, soreness or itching of the skin
  • Sores, welting or blistering of the skin
  • Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet or sex organs
  • Swelling of the glands
  • Swollen eyelids, face, lips, hands or feet
  • Tightness across the chest
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Unusual bruising

Frequency of occurrence not known:

  • Abdominal pain or tenderness
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal or stomach cramping
  • Stomach tenderness or pain
  • Watery and severe diarrhea

Other side effects can also occur that are less serious and do not normally require that you seek medical attention. These side effects will usually abate over time and do not indicate other wider medical problems that may be occurring. Dosage

This medication will be administered in a hospital or clinic by a trained medical professional. There will be a doctor present to give direct supervision. You will receive the treatment through an injection into one of your veins.

This medication is usually administered as a single dose of 1200mg directly into the vein through infusion.

Interactions

Some medications should never be used in conjunction with one another. This is because medications can interact in the body. In severe cases serious and potentially life-threatening results may occur from the use of two medications at the same time. In other cases, some drugs may prevent one another from working or may increase the risk of certain side effects occurring.

This is because certain treatments may worsen other conditions and because the chance of side effects occurring can be increased. Warnings

In making the decision to receive any medication you should consider the risks in relation to the benefits of use. This is a decision that should be made by you and your doctor and you should ensure that all of the following factors have been fully considered:

AllergiesĀ ' You should inform your doctor if you have ever suffered from any unusual reactions when using any medications in the past. An allergy to certain medications may prohibit the use of this treatment. You should also inform your doctor of any other allergic reactions that you have suffered from in the past. This includes allergies to animals, foods, dyes, preservatives and any other substances.

Pediatric 'The use of this treatment has not been tested for safety and efficiency in children. Use should be avoided and other medications should be sought for treatment of bacterial skin infections in children.

Geriatric No age-specific limitations have been noted in the treatment of elderly patients. This treatment is expected to work normally in the elderly.

Pregnancy The risk of use during all trimesters has been categorized as C. This means that there is a potential risk to the use of this treatment when pregnant. You must inform your doctor if you are pregnant before beginning use of this treatment. Use should only be carried out in pregnant women when there is a clear need to do so.

Breastfeeding There is no adequate information to determine the risks of using this treatment when breastfeeding. Some medications may pass into the milk of the mother and be transferred to the nursing infant. You should discuss this with your doctor and consider the risks of breastfeeding and weigh these against the benefits of continuing nursing during treatment.

You will need to have your progress regularly checked by a doctor while you receive this medication. The doctor will need to assess that it is working properly to determine if you should continue with use. You may require blood tests to check for unwanted effects from this medication.

The use of this medication in conjunction with Warfarin can increase the risk of suffering bleeding problems. You should inform your doctor if you are taking Warfarin before use and if you are treated with both medications then you must report any of the following to your doctor immediately:

  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Dizziness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Red stools
  • Black or tarry stools
  • Darkened urine
  • Bloody urine
  • Troubled breathing
  • Coughing up of blood

The use of Oritavancin can change the results of medical tests. You should inform any doctor or medical professional that you interact with that you are taking this medication before they do any tests or give any treatment. This will help to prevent interactions and will avoid misdiagnosis.

A serious allergic reaction can occur when using this medication. You will be supervised during administration to observe for this, but you must tell your doctor straight away if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Difficulty with breathing
  • Trouble with swallowing
  • Swelling of hands or face
  • Swelling of tongue or mouth

Infusion related complications can also occur from the administration of Oritavancin. Such conditions can be life-threatening and will require that you receive immediate medical attention. You should inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following during administration:

  • Coughing
  • Difficulty with swallowing
  • Dizziness
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Troubled breathing
  • Swelling of the hands or face
  • Feverishness
  • Chills
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Welts
  • Feeling of warmth
  • Redness

Patients may develop diarrhea and this may be severe. This side effect can occur at any point for up to 2 months following treatment being given. You should not take any medications for the treatment of diarrhea in this period because this can actually make the condition worse. If you experience diarrhea then you should contact your doctor for advice. If you have any questions about this then you should discuss this with your doctor before beginning use.

You should inform your doctor if you have any developing bone pain. This can be a sign that you have a bone infection that will need to be treated separately.

Do not take any other medications in conjunction with this treatment unless you have been ordered to by a doctor.

Storage

This medication should be stored between 2-8Ā°C.

Once diluted the treatment should not be stored for longer than 6 hours at room temperature or 12 hours when refrigerated.
