Nose Blistering

The nasal mucosa is a delicate tissue that is sensitive to the smallest form of irritation. Clear blisters are generally filled with serum or plasma, and the ones full of pus are mostly infected by nose blistering.

Overview:

Nose blisters are sometimes grouped closely in the nose and can break, leaving a crust that disappears after some time. Blisters caused by blistering can hold lymph, plasma, pus, blood or serum and they can spread through contact if they are caused by a bacteria or virus. Kissing and oral sex are notorious for spreading it.

Causes:

Any form of irritation on the skin around the nose can result in fluid being trapped between the upper and the lower layers. The nasal tissues respond by forming fluid to protect the lower levels of the skin from further damage. Triggering factors include:

Friction or rubbing

If continued long enough, intense rubbing of the nose can cause blisters. The moist and warm conditions in the nose stimulate blister formation when rubbed consistently. Blood vessels close to the surface of the skin can leak on impact and cause a blood blister.

1. Dry or dusty air

When exposed to dry air due to environmental and weather conditions, the usually moist nasal mucus dries up as well. The crusts formed can injure the nasal mucosa and cause blisters inside the nose. Dusty environments also coat the inner parts of the nose and cause injuries. Going to industrial sites without protective masks expose you to the risk of your nose blistering.

2. Nose picking

Nose picking is a common habit among some people, and most do not know of the danger it poses on them. Fingernails inserted into the nose can injure the upper layer of the nasal mucosa causing blisters. Dirty nails can also infect the blister with bacteria and complicate the condition further.

3. Blood clots

The nose bleeds when the blood vessels around it are bombarded by a massive impact, high blood pressure, or dry environmental conditions. Blood clots form in an attempt to stop blood leaks from ruptured blood vessels.

Extreme temperature

First and second-degree burns on the nose causes blisters. Second degree burns blister immediately while first-degree ones blister after about two days.

Chemical Exposure

Detergent, cosmetic, or solvent chemicals can cause nose blistering if it comes into contact with that part of the skin. An allergic reaction to an insect’s sting has similar effects.

1. Allergies

The body can exhibit abnormal immune responses to certain substances, some harmless. Some of the allergic conditions cause the nasal mucosa to be stimulated and result in nasal congestion, a runny nose and sneezing. Wiping the nose frequently can irritate the skin and cause blistering.

2. Drugs

Drugs like nasal sprays that are prescribed to ease nasal congestion can inflame, dry the nose, or increase mucus production. The resulting condition is favorable for breeding of pathogenic bacteria. The spray can also injure the nasal cavity directly.

Medical conditions

1. Infections

Viruses and bacteria trigger conditions like common colds that expel the infectious mucous through the nose. The sensitive skin that has repeatedly been rubbed can form blisters around the airway. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause sores in the nose, and flu and common colds worsen it further.

2. Autoimmune disorders

Autoimmune disorders trigger inflammation and soreness in particular tissues in the body. The immune system can target the nasal tissues and masses can form around it causing a swelling in the nose. A common disorder with such effects is sarcoidosis.

3. Folliculitis

This happens when the hair inside the nose is pulled aggressively leaving the pores open. It is predisposed to infection by a bacteria named Staphylococcus aureus. It can make the skin feel tender and painful, and also form a blister full of pus.

Treatment:

The treatment for nose blistering depends on the triggering factor. Some medications have a combination of cures, like antihistamine and a decongestant can be coupled in one drug.

Antibiotics

Infectious causes of nose blistering require antibiotics to treat them. They kill and inhibit the multiplication of bacteria in the body. Be aware of antibiotics you may be allergic to and let your doctor prescribe one that your body does not react to.

Corticosteroids

If the nose blister resulted from factors that cause inflammation, corticosteroids are the most effective treatment. They offer relief to redness, itchiness, and swelling resulting from inflammation. If you miss a dose, make a point of taking it as soon as possible. However, if it catches up with the next dose, do not take both at the same time.

Antihistamines

Nose blistering caused by allergic reactions require antihistamines, which can relieve food, indoor, and seasonal allergies. It blocks or reduces histamines that make your nose itch or run and blisters that may form on the skin around the nasal area.

Decongestants

If congestion in the airway fuels nose blistering, decongestants should be used to combat the effects. It shrinks the blood vessels that had swollen and congested the nasal passage. If clear, the blistering will ease as well.

Others

Avoid pricking the blister and if it happens by mistake, do not remove the skin. This is because the exposure of inner layers of the skin can expose it to germs and infections.

Natural remedies

Saline nasal rinse

Mix a little salt with warm, clean water and pass it through one nasal opening and out through the other. You can use a squirt bottle to dispense the saline solution. It acts as a mild antiseptic and helps to clear the nasal path.

Exercise

Working out increases blood circulation to all tissues to replenish it with oxygen and boost the immunity levels. It also eases congestion around the chest and clears the nasal passage. Thus, you will prevent diseases that stimulate nose blistering.

Pure A&D ointment

Gently dab a little A&D ointment on the blisters. It fortifies the skin with vitamin A and D that kills bacteria on the surface. This oil is free of side effects and safe for use in both adults and children.

Healthy eating habits

Embrace good eating habits that involve a proper heavy breakfast, lunch, light dinner and healthy snacks between meals. The choice of food should be nutritious and be eaten at the right intervals. Remember also to take a lot of fluids throughout the day. Avoid skipping meals because it deprives the body of necessary nutrients. A healthy body is more equipped to fight infections.

Ginger Paste

Ginger has anti-inflammatory benefits and healing properties. Mix some ground ginger powder with water to form a paste and apply on the blister.

Sanitization

Ensure that you sanitize your hands as often as possible. Avoid touching your nose with dirty fingernails. If you know a person with herpes virus infection, avoid contact with them because it is highly contagious.

Witch hazel

Apply witch hazel on the blister using a cotton ball. It not only stimulates the healing process, but it also prevents the blister from spreading to other parts of the body.

Probacterial foods

Yogurt and cottage cheese are probacterial and favor the growth of healthy bacteria. Consequently, it creates an environment in the body where bacterial infections cannot thrive.

Applying water-soluble petroleum jelly or antiseptic gels

It is advisable to apply petroleum jelly or antiseptic gel after a warm steamy bath because the tissues will be clean and moist. They provide a protective layer on the blister so that it does not become sore, dry, and painful. Do not lie down immediately after applying it. Make sure that the jelly is water-soluble to prevent lipoid pneumonia. Warm baths also increase blood circulation in the body and give relief for nasal blockage.

Vitamin C

It can boost your immunity of the body and is found naturally in foods like lemon, berries, and juices. Some oils found in the departmental stores are also rich in Vitamin C.

Rest and avoid stress

Stress stimulates the production of hormones that significantly lower immunity levels and makes you prone to infections resulting in nose blistering. Get at least 6 hours of sleep and ease pressure by listening to music or working out.

Prevention:

Habits reform

Use nasal sprays if the nose feels dry, inhale steam, or use room humidifiers to keep the nasal mucosa moist. Nose picking habits with dirty fingernails are discouraged at all costs. When blowing the nose, you should be gentle on the nose and use minimal force.
